k&k tourist tips 10 -
avoiding pickpocket paranoia or how to keep your stuff safe
As with any big city, Paris does have its share of pickpockets. But you don't need to go over the top and padlock your handbag to your belt in order to avoid losing your passport, credit cards, camera, money... In show 10 we talk about some of the practical things you can do to keep your stuff safe when travelling.

Oh yes, I have been the idiot tourist who left my backpack purse ON MY BACK and got on the overcrowded #1 metro. Two young kids crowded on behind us; one distracted my traveling partner (i.e. "Mom") and the other lifted the velcro flap on my backpack and had the entire wallet in seconds... then jumped off at the next stop before I could do a thing about it.
Lessons learned: don't buy a cheap day-pack with only a velcro closure. (Men: don't put your wallet in your back pocket! Easy pickins'!) Make copies of your passport because it makes it easier to get a replacement at your embassy. Know where your country's embassy is located in Paris. And don't keep all your worldly good in your wallet.
You're right: Paris DOES have a lot of pickpockets but they are very rarely violent (unlike in some US cities like New York) and they're very good at what they do. Just be aware, plan ahead, and do the smart thing. Do as I say and do NOT (not as I did THEN!)
